Open prairie wind, no city to break it
Casselton sits out on open farmland along the interstate west of Fargo, with none of the buildings or windbreaks that a denser town provides to cut wind speed before it reaches a house. Gutters, siding, and roofing all take more direct wind load here than a comparable job inside Fargo city limits, and we spec accordingly, closer hanger spacing on gutters and more attention to shingle wind rating on roof replacements.
We have seen gutter systems installed to a standard city spec fail years earlier on an exposed Casselton lot than the identical system would have on a sheltered in-town property, simply from the wind.
Older farmhouse and small-town housing stock
A lot of the homes we work on in and around Casselton are older farmhouses and small-town construction from well before the modern building code era, with wood gutters or original steel gutters on some of the oldest properties. These older systems need an honest evaluation of whether they are worth maintaining as-is or whether the maintenance cost has crossed the point where replacing with modern seamless aluminum makes more sense, and we lay that choice out plainly rather than pushing replacement on a system that still has life left in it.
Ice dams on older, less insulated attics
Older Casselton homes frequently have attic insulation levels well below what a modern build would carry, which means more heat loss into the attic and a higher risk of ice dams during our sharp freeze-thaw cycles. Bringing insulation up to depth and correcting ventilation on these older homes usually delivers a bigger reduction in ice dam frequency than on a newer, better-insulated house, simply because there is more room for improvement to begin with.
Working out toward Casselton
Casselton is a farther drive than our closer-in towns, so we schedule visits out there in batches where it makes sense, but we do not treat it as out of range. Roofing, gutter, and siding calls from Casselton and the smaller communities around it run on the same inspection-first, written-scope process as anything closer to Fargo.
